5-0 out of 5 stars hard analysis
trip., the traditional british oxbridge exam. questions, compareable to the euro. olympia math. questions, it is the hard analysis includeing the elementary functions, the sequel step is whittaker's special functions, it is very important when it is a century ago. preparation to this are pure math. of green, gow, tranter, in important british colony, some school teacher write the solutions. therefore for learning hard analysis pure math., it is very important to collect trip. oxbridge exam. questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Enduring Classic
G. H. Hardy was one of the greatest mathematicians of the 20th century. When the first edition of this book appeared in 1908, it was the only comprehensive introduction to analysis in the English language.Nearly a century later, it remains unsurpassed in that genre in any language.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hard Core Math
This book is very hard core. I bought it to help with the math in Penrose's Road to Reality. Which is really hard core. So now I need a math book to help with the math in this book. As far as my ability allows I fully agree with the other 5 star reviews of this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars One of the WORST textbooks I ever used
This book sucks at explaining, half the examples in this book just refer you to other examples/exercises that you have to complete yourself. HOW DOES THIS HELP IF YOU HAVE TO DO THE PROBLEM YOURSELF??!? Half the practice problems are theoretical questions that do not help you in understanding the concept whatsoever. The only thing it does is confuse and frustrate you more. Whoever uses this textbook to teach is obviously incompetent and/or has not looked it over at all.

4-0 out of 5 stars A math book
This isn't the easiest linear text I've scene. This also isn't the hardest. The book has a ton of applications, which is good if you're an applied math, engineering, or science major. If your interests are in pure math the applications are still a nice little side note. The book's explanations are explained as clearly as possible without giving up any rigor. At first I didn't like the book, but after looking at several other linear textbooks I realized that these authors did a good job of explaining a difficult topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best math book I've ever had
This book is a fabulous resource... explains things in as clear a way as Linear Algebra can be.If you want deeper understanding, many concepts are described in more depth, and most proofs are given in detail. It's notfilled with cartoons and useless pictures like some textbooks, but clear, concise explanations of what turns out to be an interesting and fairlysimple area of mathematics. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for self study
I returned to college after 15 years. Before taking the math placement tests, I studied Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 - I placed into precalculus and received an A in this class.I credit the books for giving me theseresults - prior to this I was a poor math student.I have just finishedcalculus (1st class) with an A.I really recommend both of these books. They helped me enormously - and I have regained confidence in my mathabilities.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Best for Algebra 2
As a seventh grader who took algebra 2, I can say Iknow math. This textbook is a wonderful apporach and gives real life applications for seemingly useless algebra. Great book! If interested in algebra, buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent work
We used this book to prove a theorem in our studies that is directly related to my PhD thesis on spatial data mining and spatial statistics. This book is a master-piece.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book
This is one of my favorite books in my library on this subject. Also I have used this book for my class as main textbook along with "Iterative Methods for Solving Linear and Nonlinear Equations" by C. T. Kelley , which is another SIAM book.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book for game developers
I'm about 2/3 through this book now, and I've found it very helpful. The explanations are good, and what I particularly like is how he illustrates most of the topics with pictures and graphs, explaining the relevance to rendering graphics in games.Unlike most math books and courses I've taken, I'm not left wondering "what the heck relevance does THIS have?" every time I turn a page.He also does provide C++ code game graphics rendering at the end of most topics. The code is very useful, and well explained.I can definitely see myself using some of it in future projects.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to the Math and Algorithms Behind Rendering
The first time I tried to read this book, I took frequent breaks and only made it to about chapter 10, not really understanding a few of the proofs and algorithms. However, after going through the entire book all at once in about a week, I was able to understand everything. It was definately worth it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not for Novices or Intermediate
Not an easy read. I thought of myself as being an intermediate level mathematician - leaning slightly towards the novice, but this was beyond my expectations. After the first few chapters on Vectors, getting into Matrices he lost me.Even some of the vector math lost me.Sure, if I want to find the cross product of two 3d vectors I can do it, I'd just go look up his source code, but *why* it works exactly?Don't know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
Well priced, full of every possible ODE technique, and is perfect for engineers and scientists who are not full-fledged mathematicians.I especially appreciate the applications sections--instead of learning obscure technique after obscure technique, the reader can jump ahead to problems in mechanics, physics, etc. and grab the most useful of the bunch. This makes the material much more interesting. The only downside is that I fear I'll wear my copy out, since it's an 800 page paperback.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, comprehensive, and well organized.
This is by far the greatest ODE book in the market. It is extremely thorough and comprehensive. I am an undergrad and I will be taking an ODE class this coming fall 06. After reading most of this book, I am way ahead of the class. I recommend this to anyone who truly wants to learn how to solve differential equations.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Majority Rules
In this case, everyone is right, this is an amazing book.I used it in conjunction with my required textbook for an undergraduate diff eq course. This book was far superior.Who would think a subject like this could be made so accessible?Like others, comparing this 'dinosaur' to current text makes me wonder at the declining level of quality in our education system. Or maybe this book is just that good? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Choose your edition carefully
This is a great book. It's the place where modern number theory begins. It's also well enough written that it's enjoyable to read today.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not bad for 204 years old.
Gauss wrote Disquisitiones between 1795 and 1801. If I can read and understand Clarke's translation in less time than it took Gauss to write the original, I will be doing well. The mathematics has not been superseded and the historical aspect is extremely valuable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect!
This text is perfect for advanced undergraduates and those in their first year (or two) of graduate school. The examples are based almost entirely on linear algebra and thereby combine abstract and linear algebra.
5-0 out of 5 stars Quite simply, the best math book - Ever!
Okay so I guess this review is kind of biased - I've just completed the 2-semester algebra sequence at MIT, being taught by Prof. Artin himself. The course itself was truly fantastic, and throughout the year I have been in utter awe of Prof. Artin - he is without doubt as close to a role-model as I'm ever going to have.
2-0 out of 5 stars Lack of Explanation and overall disappointing
Frankly, if you use this book, it will be slow going. There is so much to fill in between what Artin covers and what you need to learn to understand the material. I often find myself completely lost in this text (and so do many of the other students in my class). The text and proofs seem to have been trimmed down to the bare minimum, at the cost of the user's understanding. Unlike many texts, in this text you have to understand nearly everything before moving on because nothing is explained or discussed twice (so if you don't like the way it is explained the first time in the text, you are in trouble because that will be your only explanation). Examples are difficult to find -- they are literally within the text, often not even beginning a new paragraph when doing an example. That is, the examples are difficult to find IF there are even examples (there are often times where an example would be extremely useful, but Artin does not provide one, or if he does, glosses over it with little detail). I've leaned a lot on the internet and class notes to get me through my year-long abstract algebra course. Perhaps my mind just isn't meant for abstract algebra, but this is the only math book that I always have difficulties finding answers to my questions and rarely can follow, even after multiple readings. A remark on the problems -- the problems occasionally use terms that the book never even explains or even mentions (leaving you even more confused).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro to Real Analysis
Lay's book is my second favorite book on introductory level real analysis--please see my review of Elementary Analysis by Kenneth Ross.Ross somehow covers a lot more material, and quite a bit more clearly than Lay, BUT, the first two chapters of Lay's book covering axiomatic set theory are wonderfully written.I particularly love the clearly written coverage of the paradoxes contained in the Fraenkel-Zermalo Axioms, in Particular the Banach-Tarski paradox which states that a solid sphere of radius A < B can be cut an pasted into a sphere of radius B. Then, from chapter 3 onwards, Lay and Ross pretty much follow each other, Lay being more wordy than Ross, Ross being far more clear than Lay.
5-0 out of 5 stars good to go
The book arrived in good condition and I have not had any problems with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Definitely a good first text
I bought this book because I have been looking for a Introductory analysis text that isn't too advanced, but yet doesn't gloss over the essential stuff, and I found it in Lay's book. For the self-studier, this book is excellent!I have several books on analysis: Shilov, Kolomogorov, Rosenlicht, Ross,etc...For the beginner, this book is superior to all of them.A plethora of examples. Also, a good range of problems:from straight forward problems requiring only the use of a definition to more advanced problems requiring a little thought. If you already have had some Analysis, then this book is probably not for you. But, if you are a student who wants to learn Analysis on your own, then this book would be hard to beat. After this book, one should be able to tackle "Papa Rudin".For according to Rudin, all that is needed to study his "Real and Complex Analysis" tome, is the first seven chapters of his "Principles of Mathematical Analysis".This book covers all that Rudin covers with the exception of Riemann-Stieltjes integration. On the whole, this is a great start! If proof-based math is new to you, then you will appreciate the first chapter on proofs.Would have given five stars, but I would have liked to seen Riemann-Stieltjes integration. That's really only nit picking, though. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Difficult for undergrads
I think the term "undergraduate" is a bit misleading.I think you would have had to have at least one course in linear algebra and abtract algebra to truly appreciate this book.I read it over a summer (as a master's student who lacked any coursework in linear algebra) - kind of as an independent project, and I found it to be very easy to understand. Then again, I had just taken abstract algebra. There were a couple parts that I found challenging though.I love it when he says that the proof or rest of the proof is "trivial" and unnecessary to write.I have heard he does this in many of his books.Overall great book if you have some background.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid piece of work
Like in other math books by Lang, the theory of Linear Algebra is presented in an axiomatic way, the best way of presenting since The Elements of Euclid. The way in which the theory is presented adds to the beauty. I have read this book as a refresher for Linear Algebra, about 20 years after the completion of a master's degree in an exact science. For me the level was perfect. If you have no experience with Linear Algebra beyond high school, you must first read "Introduction to Linear Algebra" by Lang or some other introductory course. The book under review does not talk about basics like Gauss-elimination. I have seen remarkably few typos. Some cross-references to theorems in other chapters were wrong, though. In all: a very good book and well worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Serge Lang is a Very Gifted Expositor
Serge Lang is a very gifted expositor. I've read the reviews saying that his books are notorious for their "dryness". At least as concerns this book - that couldn't be less true.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, straightforward. Worth a read
I don't usually review books here, and I've bought quite a few I can tell you. However, this book, I believe, warrants comment. It is a no-nonsense, simple, accurate, and mathimatically sound was of playing the lottery. It is basically just a list of wheels (systems) for you to use to get the most out of your playing. It doesn't tell you how to pick numbers, or go into any fancy (in my opinion, useless) analysis or predicitions of numbers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the small price
I doubt there is any book of its kind as well thought out and packed with as much useful imformation as this one.
5-0 out of 5 stars Clearly the best lottery wheel book out there!
This book by far is the best lottery wheel book I've purchased. I've won more money more times with Bluskov's "multiple" and "double-win guarantees" than I ever did with the other popular (GH) wheel books on the market. Of course with any lottery win you have to choose the correct numbers, but his "Table of Wins" are right on the money. I used system #3 (guarantee 5 number win if 5 of your 10 numbers are drawn--$50) Result: I correctly picked 4 numbers out of 10. I won 3- 4 number prizes ($300) plus 20- 3 number prizes ($100) for a total of $400 from my $50 investment. No other wheel book on the market has more multiple win guarantees than this author! I can't wait until he publishes a book for the pick-5 lottery. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book For Algebra Basics/Review
This book is an excellent companion for basic review of algebra concepts. Young people may find it useful, but older adults will also find it useful for a good review if returning to school. This book goes over the basic algebra concepts. It gets more difficult in the future with other books, but if you are looking to review the concepts, you won't go wrong here. Best if used in a basic algebra review course. Good luck
