5-0 out of 5 stars Great Supplement
This outline will work best for those looking for a concise supplement to their course text. The strength of this outline is in the solved problems. The weakness is in the explanation of concepts. As advertised, the book contains over 1100 fully worked problems. These problems are indeed fully worked and looking over them can be of tremendous value if you are struggling with solving particular problems in your class. If you are having a tough time with the concepts rather than the problems of calculus I would not recommend this book. The explanations are kept to a bare minimum and tough topics like delta-epsilon proofs and Reimann Integrals are not explained in detail. For instance, this book will not try to justify why you can set delta equal to epsilon to complete your limit proof, it just tells you to do it (which is exactly what you need to do to solve the problem). In other words, this book will help you solve the problems you need to solve in order to pass your exams, but it will not necessarily help you understand why those solutions work.So please do not buy this thinking it will have fuller conceptual explanations. Its strength is in its fully solved problems.

4-0 out of 5 stars Everything you need
This book will show you everything there is in calculus. It is not organized perfect, but the information is great.I am taking Cal 1, 2, and 3 so I use the book a lot.It has been a great buy, and I recomend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
This book is a great resource for those out there who want to enhance their knowledge of calculus and supplement the instruction of a professor. It can also be used to a limited extent as a replacement. This book is invaluable to me, as I suffer from sub-standard education conditions and the schaums method breaks things down easily and clearly. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY different from most introductory calculus books--simply amazing!
This book, unlike most Calculus books out there, is meant to be read and understood. The way that Calculus is taught nowadays, people use books that are 90% problems, exercises, and examples, with an emphasis on computation. This book is 90% prose, and the emphasis is on cultivating a deep understanding. In addition, the book does away with the gap between "Calculus" and "Analysis", choosing to begin with a more mathematically mature perspective...but providing ample explanation for students who have not seen the material before.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book but only if you want a deep treatment
This is one of the best math books I have ever used; Apostol does a great job of giving you intuition and telling you why the topics are important. The exposition is very clear.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not for the faint of heart!!
Both this book and the second volume were used in my Honors Calculus classes, and let me tell you, it's not for the faint of heart!!The book is very good, but unless you're willing to get into it and really go at the problems and theorems, it's not going to do you much good.If this is your first calculus textbook, don't expect detailed explanations and pretty summaries of the chapter, since it doesn't have them; do expect lots of theorems and complicated proofs. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing at best
The book was a major disappointment. I am glad that I did not purchase it for my class, but instead borrowed it. The ordering of topics and emphasis choices never seemed to make sense to me. The layout throughout most of the text is like one long, run-on sentence. The underlying structure of numerical analysis never developed and I was left swimming in meaningless details while the basics were short-changed by an over abundance ofspecialized algorithms. Perhaps the text's curriculum could be saved by a capable professor, but alas my professor was just as scatter-brained as the text. More pictures would also have been helpful. A replacement text I recommend, which covers the first, matrix theory portion of this book, is David S. Watkins' Fundamentals of Matrix Computations. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Lots of code but little explanation
The explanations are cursory and tend to overlook many of the points to be considered before applying one of their examples to real problems. While good at providing source code for an experienced signal processing engineer or mathematician, this book can be dangerous for those in search of a quick fix without the background to evaluate what they are really doing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Obligatory book
What can I say? I think that I only want to say that this book is the best of the best when you talk about numerical methods. A lot of code and a great mathematical background. It's an obligation to have this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good starting point
This is very simply the only book that explains all essential numerical algorithms comprehensively and gives examples how one might implement them. The infinite number of reviews and discussions about the code can - in my eyes - be summarized as follows: it works, it lacks robustness, and you will find a better open-source alternative to virtually every single function. Some details that are worth knowing:

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible book not enough examples
If you buy the book alone without the solutions manuals and you are taking calculus 1 2 or 3 you will have the hardest time in your life. Its ridicoulus how the examples in the book are general and when the problems arrive in the section they are mostly special cases where you have do to something absolutly different. For a student this book is a nightmare, maybe for somebody that has taken the class before or knowledgeble this book might be useful to practice hard problems. In my opinion, books like these should not be published for the purposes of teaching their content in universities.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent condition. Great price. Fast delivery.
I could not have asked to receive this book in a better condition. The book is in perfect condition.
3-0 out of 5 stars Poorly Organized
This book does a decent job with defining theories and concepts, which anyone can do; however, when trying to provide or explain examples and solutions to problems it leaves you very short of how it is done. The solutions manual is highly recommended for this book (ISBN 0-201-66211-6). Throughout the semester my professor used selected problems throughout the chapters to practice on but lectured and provided examples from his own problems. Without a lecture, this book is very hard to work with. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Advanced Crypto for the college mind.
This very detailed work is not for the light hearted. It's an in depth look at the mathmatics behind cryptography. If you're looking for a book to help you program then look for Applied Cryptography by Bruce the crypto king instead. If you're looking for something to help you learn cryptoanalysis and how to break codes then this is the first step.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic traditional reference
The Chapter 14 - Efficient Implementation - shows several multiple precision algorithms. They are very easy to understand and implement under any microprocessor. It is a very good complement to the book set written by Donald Knuth (The Art of Computer Programming, Volumes 1-3 Boxed Set), another fantastic traditional reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very detailed book, but not for everyone.
This is a fairly strong book on crypto, with heavy detail on the math involved. The upside is that the second chapter is devoted to most of the important mathematical theory you'll need to understand for the rest of the book. The downside? That chapter tries to cover just about the same breadth of information as a semester long course in Number Theory.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Execllent Easy to Read
The examples in this book are great. All concepts in the text are explained clearly with many examples for the reader to review.I consider this text to be one of the best that I have used. This text is not only a great text to be used in the classroom, but it is so easy to understand that I also recommend this text for individual learning.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay if required, but
The Anton book appears to be the standard in teaching undergrad LA, but I personally didn't like it very much. Part of the problem is due to several misprints in the early chapters. Some of the definitions of basic concepts are confusing at best, wrong at the worst. I found myself relying on the Hubbard-Hubbard "Vector Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Differential Forms" to get through the course. The explanations were more concise and easier to understand. If you're teaching yourself, Hubbard-Hubbard is the way to go.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for the uninitiated
I bought this book hoping to learn about matrix analyis. I did not. Thisbook is simply a reference manual with plenty of theorems, axioms etc. withlittle explanation. They give it to you rough and row. NOT A SINGLE SOLVEDEXAMPLE, and not evensolutions for the exercises given in the book areprovided. If you intend to learn about matrix analysis, as I did, let notthe 5 stars review mislead you. Don't make the same mistake, this book isnot for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars An encyclopedic reference for matrix analysis and linear alg
Horn and Johnson's MATRIX ANALYSIS is simply a masterpiece. You can findeach and every result in matrix analysis along with it's proof in thisbook. Look at their companion volume "Topics in Matrix Analysis"too. Some of these results cannot be found elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book.... for the initiated
Horn and Johnson has written an excellent reference book onsomewhat-advanced linear algebra (from the point of view of an engineer). There's a lot of treasures in this book, but this book is NOT for beginninglinear algebra. Rather, it is written as a handy reference to review andlearn certain topics in linear algebra.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The truth about how to become a successful trader
I purchased this book because I was trading with a method that used the awesome oscillator. I figured I should know something about the person who created it. I got much more than that. The book helped me to quit focusing on trading techniques and to start looking at my own mental state for trading. Turning inward has allowed me build better confidence in myself and mymethod. That in turn allows me to trade with a mindset which successful traders have. The fact that the book also presents a very viable trading method is just an added bonus. This book and "Trading In The Zone" by Mark Douglas transformed my trading career.

2-0 out of 5 stars Trading Books
As an experienced trader who has bought thousands of dollars of trading books from Amazon I found this one less than impressive.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mind blowing
The actual trading methodology is not really of interest to me. As a matter of fact, it's ironic that in the first half of the book statements such as "there is no magic system" and "all mechanical systems will fail" are made, then in the second half of the book a rather mechanical trading system that is referred to as "automagic" is described.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you want to understand algebra and/or trig, buy this book
As an unchallenged high school student 30 years ago, I never really put much effort into either algebra or trig and still managed to ace my tests. This lack of a rigorous algebraic and trigonometric foundation killed me in subsequent college calculus courses. This book fixed that problem, 30 years later! If you are looking for a book to challenge a motivated high school student, this is the book.I loaned it to one such student after I finished it and she very quickly completed a year and a half of high school algebra and trig in one summer and went on to ace honors calculus that fall.5-0 out of 5 stars The best math book I've seen
I'm an adult learner who has always had trouble with math. This was the text in pre-Calc.Provides (1) clear, step by step instruction, (2) uncomplicated margin exercises to reinforce basic concepts, (4) lots ofgood practical problems, (5) a sea of drill problems, (6) chapter reviewexercises and (7) chapter tests. I refer to this book regularly. I wishthese folks would do a Calculus book!

5-0 out of 5 stars An extremely helpful and concise review / re-learning text.
As a non-traditional student of 35 returning to undergraduate university, I had tested into Calculus but as the semester progressed, it bacame apparent that the intervening years had taken their toll on my math basics. It was clear that even as I struggled to understand the new material, Ihad either forgotten my basics or never learned them well. This lack wasseriously impeding learning the new material.I finally took a reviewcourse with this book, re-took the calculus, graduated cum laude, went onfor Masters degrees, and am now working on my doctorate. This book cutthrough all the "math-ese" to understanding the basics of thecalculations, not just regurgitating the material. The authors also seem tobe able to focus on exactly where people routinely have problems in a veryunderstandable language. It is not an exaggeration to say a single book canbe pivotal in one's success. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The way to learn algebra
Most critisism of the book are based in the fact that topic are not treated in deep, and the reason is that there is no need to do that. Lang's porpouse is to introduce the reader to HIGHER ALGEBRA, while for example Dummit & Foote just end in Category Theory or Homological Algebra. He just introduce what he consider necessary to know about groups. Of course, if your porpouse is to learn, let's say Group Cohomology, then its good for you to know as much as possible about groups, modules and stuff, but Lang's try to focus on what HE consider is important to be known.
4-0 out of 5 stars 4pro
It is one of the brilliant classics, must have for every advanced algebraist. Probably you will not find here such nouveau labyrinths of mathematical thought as in Beta Algebra by Algirdas Javtokas (which in my opinion is a revolutionary book), but it is unvaluable for seminars or supplementary material for algebra courses.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book grows on you.
When I examined this book as an undergraduate I did not like it; often this is a sign that a book is poorly written, but in this case I just needed more background. Now I see this text as a gold-mine: clearly written, provocative, and rich in examples.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rejoice if your university made you use it!
First of all, what is this book about? It's just your regular multivariable calculus stuff, what some would have as calculus 2 (others as calculus 3).
1-0 out of 5 stars Agree with K.Green
This is not a math nerd who learned calculus in middle school, nor a professor. This is just a lowly student that learned single variable calculus in 11/12th grade of High School. I found this book to be lacking in explanation and the examples in the text were not very helpful either.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent
After a couple of weeks of using this textbook, I am mostly happy with it.It does a good job of explaining the material, however, it is not very concise and takes a long discussion to make a point. It is longer than necessary and contains unnecessary features.Other than that, for the money it is a good deal, and thus the four stars. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars hidden methods?
Perhaps the most interesting part of this book is missing. For a comprehensive listing of integrals, there is no better book than this. Remarkably easy to find a desired integral, if the book covers it at all.
1-0 out of 5 stars CD-ROM version may not work for you.
The paper version is a real touchstone for the practice of all manner of applied mathematics. The CD-ROM version belongs in the discount bin. Here is why:
1-0 out of 5 stars This software is unusable on mac's and unix systems.
I bought this software hoping that it would help me to find required mathematical formulas faster. At home on my powermac (OSX.1, OS9.2) I only see messed up windows. Furthermore, the formulas are unreadable, using an archaic font. Trying to save the day, I went to my linux machine at work reading "Your operating system, Linux 2.2.19-7.0.1, is not supported by this software. It appears that the software is only suitable for some SUN and SGI machines. It only appears to run properly on a windows machine. From an editor, who I remember, is one of the few persons finding errors in Knuth's TeX system, I expected much better. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best math textbook I ever used!
After going back into this book more and more I can only revise my opinion upward. Sullivan covers almost every topic before calculus and does it in a very straightforward manner. The text has rigor proving many important statements but this is never used in sacrifice of understanding. The student solution manual is also great and highly recomended. A great text and reference book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A pretty good book
While the table of contents is very good, too much time is wasted in developing preliminaries. The text should quickly move into the core of the subject, but instead spends 220 pages developing the elementary material. A good reference for teachers of discrete mathematics with emphasis in combinatorics and not in computer science. ... Read more
