4-0 out of 5 stars Unusual reliance on text rather than equations
As a regular reviewer who reads the books he reviews, I am beginning to find a routine sameness to many of the books I examine. This holds for introductory logic, some areas of which have not changed for thousands of years. In many cases, it has become so routine that it is very hard to read the books, and to solve this problem I have adopted the solution that I read approximately ten pages at a time. Most books covering this material are a sequential listing and proving of the fundamental theorems. Correct, but hardly a point of differentiation between books. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars prof. review
thisis the best intro to fuzzy ever writen....im a university prof on the subject of AI so...Ive read tons of books on the subject and this is by far the best intro to fuzzy even for those who ll be learning on their own... very simple put and yet very abording on the matter!

4-0 out of 5 stars A First Course in Fuzzy Logic
If you are looking for a book on Fuzzy Logic Theory, this is a good book. It explains the mathematical basis of fuzzy logic, the mathmatical symbols used, provides proofs for theorems, etc. The chapters and sections areclearly labeled in the table of contents, making it easy to zero in on atopic. It is a College Text Book, with problems to solve at the end of eachchapter. Selected problems have answers in the back of the book.Unfortunately, that wasn't the type of book that I expected or needed. Iwas looking more for the hands on, how to, type of book. That is the onlyreason it did not get 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic in Combinatorics
This is the book from which I learnt Combinatorics theErdosian way. One of the most pleasing qualities of the book is the bite-sized chapters. Perhaps this is one of the first books to start this trend. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Gems of Combinatorics
This book provides an excellent introduction to a wide variety of extremely active areas ofcombinatorics. It focuses on the "gems" of the field -- proofs and results which aresimultaneously deep, central, and beautiful. One particular feature is thesection on infinte Ramsey theory which presents this beautiful but taxingarea in an exceptionally clear fashion. There are many good exercises. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Though not a classic (yet!), WAY better than any
This book is a descent introduction to Set Theory.Whether you want a textbook for a relevant course, or plan to use it for self-study, this should be your choice. 2-0 out of 5 stars No Good
This book is not good for someone who has never learned set theory before and is self-teaching.The book has not very clear. Also the book does not have the answeres to the questions so one can not see if they actually understand the material.

4-0 out of 5 stars A key into the realm of mathematical insanity
I took two courses from Professor Moschovakis which used this book as their text.I highly recommend this book for anyone who has always wanted to learn about set theory. It starts off with Cantor's naive concept on set theory and his proofs concerning the "sizes" of infinite sets. From there, it presents Russell's Paradox, which created the necessity for the axiomatic system that Zermelo developed in 1908.From there, the book discusses the "construction" of the natural numbers, cardinal/ordinal arithmetic, partially and well-ordered sets, the results of the Axioms of Choice and Replacement, and much more. The only thing that I would criticize this book for is that sometimes the theorems that you'd really like to see proofs of are left as homework assignments.Other than that, this book rocks! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Intermedium level
This book deepensconcepts about fuzzy theory and fuzzy control. It is a useful tool to develop applications in fuzzy control. Otherwise this one presents a basic introduction to neural network, furthermore the theory about neural-fuzzy and fuzzy-neural is presented in basic form. The book contains a large number of examples about all items and Matlab software is used in many of they. I would catalog this book inmedium level of deepening. Topics about fuzzy control are trieddeeper than neuro-fuzzy, fuzzy-neural topics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory book
Fascinating reading. I had trouble putting it down at times, which is a lot to be said for a text book! Although I had lots of experience with classical control methods I hadn't studied neural or fuzzy systems before. I found the book gave me an excellent introduction to the topics in a highly readable format and yet also gave me the details mathematics required to be able to be able to program fuzzy and neural systems myself. It also had examples using the Matlab toolboxes which was useful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well done explanations of basic group theory
The study of abstract algebra begins with the study of groups and that starts with the basics of mathematical proof, sets and binary operations. This book begins with those basics and then steps through the fundamental concepts of group theory. The chapters on groups are:
5-0 out of 5 stars A very fine introduction
I'm learning group theory in order to use it in physics. I found this book very good for a first introduction to the subject. It starts with pretty simple stuff and then proceeds with more serious matters. I find the example very clear, and I especially appreciate that full solutions to the exercises are provided, so that you can check your own findings. There are a few easy to amend typos, and I think the demonstration on page 46, theorem 20, part (2) is false. Finding another demo was a good exercise !5-0 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise
Many books on algebra lose sight of the basic underlying ideas when the author gets caught up in the formalism. Formalism is good but, as Bourbaki has demonstrated, it isn't always the best thing for teaching newcomers.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent and unique perspective on combinatorics
When one thinks of combinatorics of finite sets, he or she might first think of codes and designs. But this book introduced me to an area of combinatorics which I knew very little about, namely extremal set problems and their solutions which fall under famous Theorems by famous mathematicians: Erdos-Ko-Rado, Sperner, and Kruskal-Katona to name a few. I found these topics fascinating and fun to think about, which is in large part due to the author's coherent style, organization, explanation, and expertise of the subject-matter. Moreover, the author provided solutions to *every* one of the 150+ problems!!! How many math books can boast such a claim? Aside from may be a rough presentation of Lemma 4.3.2 the rest of the book is a masterpiece which I hope will gain more recognition within the next twenty years. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars twisted pants unleashed on men
This is one of the more popular introductory textbooks on mathematical, with Enderton's being its biggest competitor. I prefer Mendelson's for its breadth of material and the choice of sources of proofs he uses, which are generally the shortest ones (e.g. Kalmar's for the completeness of the propositional calculus).
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful at the second glance.
Mendelson's Introduction to Mathematical Logic was the textbook for a logic-course I took a couple of years ago. At the time I did not like the book at all. It seemed too difficult and so typographically ugly that I thought I would never use it. Things have changed though. Now, I keep it close at hand on my desk and use it almost every day. Technical questions that used to require a trip to the library and several different books to answer, can usually be resolved by a look in Mendelson's book. It's wonderfully rich and clear! I still don't find everything easy but that's because the material isn't easy and so not something Mendelson can be blamed for. I do find the typography ugly and at times annoying, but that's a small price to pay for a presentation as rigorous and detailed as Mendelson's.
4-0 out of 5 stars Best reference in first step math logic
Mendelson reaches an optimal point between the concision of the expert reference, and the wideness requested to a introductory text. Not in vain it has been the text forced in the universities during forty years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Wow.It's a real shame that this book costs so much. The explanations of classical set theory and fuzzy set theory are simple, clear, and not too hard to understand.I would have liked to have seen some answers to selected problems in this text.Still, for anyone who wants to learn fuzzy set theory or review the basics, here is a very excellent place to go.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to classical and fuzzy logic...
I'm quite impressed with the clarity and style of Klir's introduction to fuzzy set theory. The book starts with the absolute basics of classical logic and then builds to classical set theory. This half of the book is actually far superior to any of my other logic books since it puts all the truely relevant material together in a very cogent manner.4-0 out of 5 stars for absolute beginners
I use this book for a course in the first semester. The students are not familiar with deeper mathematical ideas (not even with the one of a limit), but still thanks to Klir's book they are able to follow a kind ofup-to-date mathematics. One of the advantages of the book is that all theprincipal ideas (operations, relations, logic) are firstly explained in thecrisp case and then in the fuzzy case. ... Read more

There were two things in this book that I found distinctive, one positive and the other negative. In the positive area, the material at the end of the chapters is more thorough than I have seen in any other discrete mathematics book. Chapter reviews are composed of:

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant translation of Badiou's outstanding work.
Having spent countless hours studying the source of this translation, Badiou's groundbreaking, `breath of fresh air' Court Traité d'ontologie transitoire, I have come to the point where I can say, without hesitation, that this translation is simply much better than the partial translation of select chapters of this book found in another book, published a few years before this one by Dr. Madarasz.I've scrutinized both versions line by line next to the French original, and this translation is better in several crucial ways; that is, crucial not in the representation of the "actual meaning" of Badiou's sentences, nor regarding the author's intentions--however clear Badiou may be with them--but, rather, in getting a fair presentation of the materiality of Badiou's text; that is, of what is actually written (in French, granted) in the original.Madarasz's fidelity and concern with the actual material properties of the work definitely shows. And this is truth even if one has no idea that the other English version of some of these chapters occasionally rearranges Badiou's sentences, always refuses to vary the translation of certain words (for example, Madarasz gives us either "manifold" or "multiplicity," depending on the context; a consideration not given by other translators), and, among other offenses, the other publication manages to forget an entire paragraph concluding the chapter on Kant (why?).I do not mean to denigrate completely the alternative English versions of a large portion of this book, _Briefings on Existence_; indeed, I would argue that, in general, they're quite good.Still, they fall short of what Madarasz accomplishes here. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars reviewer at bottom should read book first
This book is not intended as textbook with which to learn the subject itself - it is intended as a partly historical treatise on how the subject developed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't skimp when it comes to your first analysis textbook
First off, I haven't purchased or read this text, but a thirty-five dollar textbook that introduces ONLY the lebesgue integral, and almost certainly only on the real number line, is not a good investment. You would do much better to stick with the classic, Walter Rudin's "Principles of Mathematical Analysis," where the Lebesgue integral is introduced in a logical manner and in a way that encourages further education.Read more
