5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Electrical Engineering Reference Book
I recently tutored a co-worker for the electrical engineering Professional Engineering license exam and this book greatly helped out in explaining Laplace transforms. The book covers transform circuit analysis by starting out with the basics and then building up to Laplace transforms. After reading this book and working through the examples, I feel much stronger in this area of electrical engineering.I have a B.S. in electrical engineering and a P.E. license since 1995.I have read several other books on this subject, including differential equations text books and I think this book presents the clearest explanations and examples applied directly to electrical engineering.I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in electrical engineering. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars [Insert title here]
I have not much to say. But for being from New Orleans and being rescued and all and trying to get used to a new school, it was tough. Then I failed math. Even worse. But this book so far is helping me catch up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real-life, practical, outstanding transition to 2ndary math
As a former K - 8 Mathematics Supervisor in high-flying school district, I can verify the validity of this Transition program in providing you the unique opportunity of actually being prepared for secondary mathematics of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and precalculus, if you go that far. You should study this book beyond what your teacher does with it, because it is best applied as a two-year broad introductory mathematical program. If you do so, you will not be hit with a brick wall in trying to do the dreaded word problems in algebra and beyond. This book is relevant, the math is real, and it is backed with over twenty years of acutal research, instead of authors' best guesses as to what works. But it will take getting used to. If you're willing to make the effort, doors will open in your future.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but someone difficult
I have to use this book for school, its good until the 7th chapter, then it starts to get confusing. I now have to do Algebra- the second one in the series. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A defense of Ogden
It is easy to see why other reviewers do not like this book: it is very advanced. It is not for an undergraduate, and probably not for a graduate student unless she or he is already very familiar with elasticity and solid mechanics. It is not, at bottom, a text for learning the rudiments of the theory of elasticity: it is more on the level of a research monograph, and Malvern or Fung are better choices for many students. However, Ogden is probably the best work available (other than perhaps Truesdell, who can be an acquired taste) on the rigourous theory of non-linear elasticity. If you have an interest in the structure of constitutive relations, need a rigourous mathematical reference for finite element modeling, or are interested in exploring the assumptions and limitations of the linearised theory of elasticity, Ogden is not just the best place to start, but possibly the only place to go.

1-0 out of 5 stars If you can't teach it, you don't understand it.
This is a horribly written book.Instead of teaching non-linear elasticity to the reader, Ogden hides behind jargon and notation.Perhaps if you know finite elasticity very well, it would serve as a good reference.1-0 out of 5 stars Not good.
I have a big problem with the Dover series to which this book belongs. The price may look good, but explanations are brief and visual representations of subjects treated are sparse.Don't buy this book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars More "Dirty" Math, compliments of Chu et alii.
While I'm positive that this book will serve engineers well, I cannot recommend it to practitioners of pure mathematics, videlicit those who are not comfortable with the bloodied abortion that is mathematics to the engineer. It blows my mind that we ever got a man on the moon! A good example can be found in the first line of page 7. omega^l=omega^(l+(2*n+1)). Keep in mind that n is an element of the set of positive integers, their claim not mine. Now, if you solve for n you'll find that this equation can only be satisfied for n=-1/2, clearly not an element of Z+! Perhaps rational numbers are included in the set of "integers for engineers." Enigmatic despite the absurdity. And yet they seem to indicate that it holds for all n in the aforementioned set! I pray that I've missed something and that someone will embarrass me by pointing out my mistake because as irate as I am right now, blood will likely shoot out of my nose in the next 5 minutes and they'll find my dead in my office at day's end.

4-0 out of 5 stars Varied, specific, and practical.
If you need this book, you already know it. You barely remember what the Fourier transform does, let alone how it works, and you need to implement it from scratch. This book is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars FITHIS reads
Dr Ryan gave a draft of the first chapter to my supervisor Dr Sarantopoulos . He also gave me Ryan's thesis . I was fascinated because I knew only the algebraic side of the subject . The first chapter introduced me to a some aspects of functional analysis likeRademacher techniques and nuclear operators . When the book was released I hesitated to give the money . However I thought that the rest chapters would be as great . AND this TRUE . I recommend this book to everyone wanting to learn on topological tensor products ( OK , OK , Banach space tensor products) since this understanding is essential for Banach algebras and factorization in Banach spaces . I believe in retrospect that the money are not that much for the content provided . I hope Dr Ryan will publish his thesis also . To point out how good is this book I urge you to read Barry Johnsons Cohomology of Banach algebras , both give a very good picture .Also Beuazamy's book (Operator Theory) has a proof on the dulality between N(H) and B(H) . Ryans book is essential for the explanation of this phenomenon . ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Dover classic.
The spectral theorem of David Hilbert, John von Neumann, and Marshall Stone gives a complete answer to the question of which operators admit a diogonal representation, up to unitary equivalence, and makes the question precise as well. The theorem states that these are the normal operators in Hilbert space. This includes the selfadjoint operators which represent observables in quantum physics, and the more interesting ones are unbounded. Remember the Heisenberg commutation relations do not admit bounded solutions. But there is a mathematical distinction between formally selfadjoint operators (also called symmetric operators) and the selfadjoint ones. It is only the latter to which the spectral theorem applies. The distinction between the two is understood from a pair of indicies (n,m), now called deficiency indices. In some applications they represent 4-0 out of 5 stars Such an easy book to read!
This is a great intro to functional analysis. Having taken a graduate course on the subject, I used this as my text. The proofs are very readable and kept clear and simple. You'll see the subject develop before your eyes. One thing: when reading this book on infinite dimensional vector spaces, always try to draw a parallel with the finite dimensional version of thesubject, linear algebra. You'll appreciate the book all the more. For everytheorem relating to a bounded linear operator on Hilbert space, replace theoperator by a matrix on Euclidean n-space.. you'll say "oh yeah! Iremember that from linear algebra!" ... Read more
